SLA : Mærsk Tower / SUND Nature Park

Designed by the Danish architect CF Møller in 2016, the forecourt of the Mærsk Tower of the University of Copenhagen is adorned with greenery thanks to the intervention of the local planning and landscaping agency SLA. The project is divided into two parts: the construction of a large park, the SUND, at the foot of the tower and the greening of the flat roofs of the building at the bottom. A landscaping project that earned its designers to receive the Scandinavian Green Roof Award.

Located in the district of Nørrebro, in the heart of the Danish capital, SUND is a haven of greenery, a break in a bubbling urban space. Installed within the city - while campuses are often located on the outskirts - the University of Copenhagen and its new 16 tower built in 2016 are now connected by a park covered with wild flora, replica of various Danish biotopes, as a nod to the borough's cosmopolitanism.

Interspersed with buildings - some old stone and tiles, as well as the main tower and its horizontal growths - the landscaped lawn is also equipped with an elevated zigzag graphic bridge. to easily reach the back of the university, whileoffering passersby many views of the garden and the different flat grassy roofs of 5 000 total square meters. Nature blooming on these surfaces is rooted in a layer of land specially developed to create self-sustaining ecosystems, with the ability to recycle rainwater and absorb excess moisture in the event of extreme weather events.

"The green roof of the Mærsk Tower successfully merges large areas of 5 000 square meters with a sophisticated design and reproduction of Danish biodiversity. " Scandinavian Green Roof Award Jury

Thanks to its development, SLA received the Scandinavian Green Roof Award last September. This is not the first time that one of the creations of the agency is rewarded by this award, since it has indeed already received a trophy in 2016 for the Egedal City Hall and in 2014 for the Novo Nordisk Nature Park.

An aesthetic project that proves that, even in a city as dynamic as Copenhagen, it is possible to breathe and maintain strong links with the outside world.
