Jean-Paul Viguier et Associés : Muse

After more than eleven years of studies and works, the Muse shopping center has just opened its doors in the new district of the Amphitheater in Metz (57). Opposite the Pompidou Center built in 2010 by Shigeru Ban, the 37 000 square-meter building with its imposing stilts, overhung with a checkerboard glass façade, is a new emblem of the city.

Located just a few tens of meters from the famous Center Pompidou Metz, Muse is part of the more comprehensive project of the Amphitheater ZAC, rehabilitation of a former brownfield 39 hectares, surrounded by SNCF railways north, Jean Park -Marie Pelt to the east, and a residential area to the west and south. Launched by the Municipality in 2008, the urban planning was entrusted to Nicolas Michelin, who imagines six longitudinal islands distributed along a north-south axis, the street of Messageries, in which are installed 137 000 square meters of housing and 137 000 offices and shops.

In the northeast of the area, the architect Jean-Paul Viguier was responsible for orchestrating the construction of the largest plot of the complex, measuring 300 meters by 100, entirely occupied by the shopping mall Muse on the first two levels. Above this glazed base, with an area of 37 000 square meters, the builder also realizes a building of 47 luxury housing called First - recognizable by its checkerboard facade camouflaging loggias - two buildings of offices and 14 housing buildings, including four social. These buildings are linked to each other by a garden arranged between buildings.
To bring light into the commercial, Jean-Paul Viguier opted for a comb plan, whose redans are occupied by two open courtyards on the main street of the ZAC, which then constitute public places in their own right. The insertion of these outdoor spaces and four works of art - one of which was done by the famous visual artist Julio Le Parc -, allows to bring artistic and leisure activities to the neighborhood.

Oriented on the vast esplanade of the Pompidou Center, the realization sports an emblematic main entrance thanks to imposing arborescent stilts supporting one of the buildings of superstructure, of four floors, all dressed glass.

An operation with great ambitions therefore, and which, although offering many economic and tourist opportunities to the agglomeration of Metz, may lack coherence between buildings, and force in the strong cultural context in which it fits .

An opening that is however steep for shopping, as the holidays approach!
