Bez+Kock Architekten : Anneliese Brost Music Forum

It is in the municipality of Bochum (Germany), not far from Düsseldorf, that the Bez + Kock Architekten agency is renovating an old Neo-Gothic church now embellished with two new wings. Germany, the motherland of classical music, hosts two concert halls dedicated to the genre, which make their acclaim in musical compositions that have made the country's glory.

The church of St. Mary, slate brick, typical of the German neo-Gothic style, is now surrounded by two monoliths of the same material covered with a thin layer of white lime. The ecclesiastical building, today stripped of any religious element, serves as a foyer and home, where readings and various cultural events take place. But to become a Mecca of classical music in the Ruhr, it had to be embellished with a main auditorium - able to accommodate up to 1 026 spectators east of the cathedral - as well as a smaller , in the west, planned for 324 lovers of symphonies of all kinds. An achievement of a total area of 5 960 square meters that seamlessly combines purified volumes and traditional religious architecture of the nineteenth century.

The large room is designed on the box model in the box for obvious acoustic as well as organizational reasons - a circular hallway surrounding the ensemble. The white-domed amphitheater, clad in American cherry wood, is dominated by an overhead ceiling covered with five acoustic veils. A minimalist space which receives, in addition to large international ensembles, the orchestra of the city which will celebrate its centenary in 2019 and which finally benefits from a place at the height of its reputation.

On the other side of the Protestant church, the second auditorium offers the particularity of being flexible, allowing to host performances or events that require special configurations. Mainly dedicated to concerts given by the students of the conservatory of the city, it also presents recitals of chamber music and performances for children.

A harmonious project, both in its programming and in the association of eclectic architectural movements.
