Bigert & Bergström : Solar Egg

This facility, located midway between the egg and the spacecraft, a sauna. Located in Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, the project signed Bigert & Bergström designers aims to promote the town who had to relocate entire neighborhoods following the subsidence caused by the iron ore operations.

In the form of an egg, Solar Egg symbolizes the rebirth of the city. The work is covered 69 stainless steel mirrors, echoes local iron fields of yesteryear. The facets reflect and break the surrounding landscape to create a new environment where snow, pine trees, the mine, the city and the sky merge. A staircase, similar to that of a spaceship, meanwhile invites visitors to take refuge in the cocoon.

The choice of sauna is not insignificant in a country where the program serves institution. The designers and keen to make a sculpture for people to meet and discuss the situation of the city while relaxing.

The interior is fully coated wood, giving the place a cozy look: the floor and wall panels are made of pine and benches in aspen wood, while a human heart shaped pan made of iron and stone throne in the center of this space.

Beyond its unusual aesthetic, the work combines tribute to the history of Kiruna, modernism and social exchange.
